Football Pathway

The Football Progression Pathway

An application of the Sports Progression Framework, tailored to the specific demands of football.

How Progression Applies in Football

  • Technical, physical, tactical, psychological and nutritional development progress together
  • Age-appropriate learning is prioritised over early specialisation
  • Progression is built for long-term performance and understanding

Football Development Stages

The football pathway is delivered through clearly defined stages that reflect long-term player development. This pathway outlines what players should be developing at each stage of their football journey, rather than providing drills or session plans. The focus is on long-term development priorities and age-appropriate expectations, allowing players parents and coaches to apply the framework within their own training environment.

Grassroots Stage

Focuses on fundamental movement skills, ball mastery, confidence and enjoyment. Players develop physical literacy, coordination and a love for the game, without pressure or early specification.

Elite Stage

Introduces higher technical detail, 1v1 development, decision making and physical progression. Training becomes more structured while remaining age-appropriate, supporting consistency and long-term growth.

Academy Stage

Designed for advanced and academy-level players. Emphasis is placed on tactical understanding, physical preparation, mindset, nutrition, match demands and long-term performance development.
