Basketball Pathway
The Basketball Progression Pathway
An application of the Sports Progression Framework, tailored to the specific demands of basketball.
How Progression Applies in Basketball
- Technical, physical, tactical, psychological and nutritional development progress together
- Age-appropriate learning is prioritised over early specialisation
- Progression is built for long-term performance and understanding
Basketball Development Stages
The basketball pathway is delivered through clearly defined stages that reflect long-term player development. This pathway outlines what players should be developing at each stage of their basketball journey, rather than providing drills or session plans. The focus is on long-term development priorities and age-appropriate expectations, allowing players parents and coaches to apply the framework within their own training environment.
Foundation Stage
Focuses on fundamental movement skills, coordination, balance, basic ball handling, confidence and enjoyment. Players develop physical literacy and a positive relationship with basketball, without pressure or early specialisation.
Development Stage
Introduces increased technical detail, consistency, decision-making and physical development. Training becomes more structured while remaining age-appropriate, supporting long-term progression and skill refinement.
Performance stage
Designed for advanced and high-performance players. Emphasis is placed on tactical understanding, physical preparation, mindset, nutrition, game demands and long-term performance development.
